A dining table must fit both the people seated at it and the space needed to pull out chairs and walk around them. Measure the room before choosing the table shape or seating capacity.
Exact capacity depends on table dimensions, leg placement and chair width. Always compare the individual product specifications.
Mark the table footprint on the floor, then account for chairs in both their seated and pulled-out positions. If the table is near a wall, cabinet or kitchen island, make sure people can pass without forcing seated guests to move.
Match chair seat height to the table or counter height. Counter-height and bar-height chairs are not interchangeable. Review the listed seat height and table height before ordering.
Benches can seat multiple people and often tuck beneath the table, making them useful in compact rooms. Individual chairs provide easier access and more personal space. A mixed chair-and-bench set can offer both benefits.
