A comfortable bedroom needs clear walking space, accessible storage and furniture that matches the mattress size. Plan the bed first, then add nightstands, dressers or wardrobes based on the space that remains.

Choose the Bed Function

• Platform bed: often supports a mattress without a box spring when slats are included.
• Daybed: combines seating and sleeping, making it useful in guest rooms and offices.
• Trundle bed: stores an additional sleeping surface beneath the main bed.
• Loft or bunk bed: uses vertical space for shared rooms or storage, but requires careful ceiling and safety-clearance measurements.
• Storage bed: adds drawers or compartments within the bed footprint.

Measure Around the Bed

Measure the mattress and complete bed-frame dimensions separately. Headboards, footboards, stairs and drawers can make the frame much larger than the mattress. Leave enough room to walk, open storage and make the bed.

Plan Bedside Storage

• Confirm recommended mattress size and maximum thickness.
• Check upper-bunk guardrail height after the mattress is installed.
• Measure ceiling clearance above the top sleeping surface.
• Review weight capacity for each sleeping level.
• Keep the ladder and access path clear.
