How to Clean a Fabric Sofa: A Step-by-Step Guide That Actually Works

经过 RicardoZhang 12 Jul 2026

A fabric sofa is the most-used piece of furniture in most homes — and the one that shows it first. Coffee drips, pet hair, that mystery mark that appeared sometime last month. The good news: most fabric sofas can be brought back to life with supplies you already own. Here's how, step by step.

First: Check the Cleaning Code

Look for a tag under the seat cushions or on the sofa frame. You'll find one of four codes, and it determines everything that follows:

  • W — Water-based cleaners are safe
  • S — Solvent-based (dry cleaning) products only, no water
  • W/S — Either is fine
  • X — Vacuum only; call a professional for stains

The steps below assume a W or W/S sofa, which covers most modern fabric furniture. If your tag says S or X, skip the water-based methods.

Weekly Maintenance: 5 Minutes That Prevent Deep Cleaning

Vacuum the sofa using the upholstery attachment — seat cushions, backrest, arms, and the crevices where crumbs collect. For pet hair that the vacuum leaves behind, run a slightly damp rubber glove over the fabric; the hair balls up and lifts right off.

Rotate and flip your seat cushions each time you vacuum. It evens out wear and keeps the fill from developing permanent dents on the "favorite seat."

Spot-Cleaning Stains: Act Fast, Blot — Never Rub

Fresh spills are the easy ones. Blot immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside of the stain toward the center. Rubbing pushes the liquid deeper into the fibers and spreads the edge of the stain.

For most stains, mix a simple solution: one teaspoon of dish soap in two cups of warm water. Then:

  1. Test on a hidden spot (back corner, under a cushion) and let it dry to confirm no discoloration
  2. Dip a cloth in the solution, wring it until barely damp, and blot the stain
  3. Follow with a cloth dampened in plain water to lift the soap residue
  4. Press dry with a towel and let it air-dry fully before sitting

For grease stains, sprinkle baking soda on the spot first, let it sit for 20 minutes to absorb the oil, vacuum it up, then proceed with the soap solution.

Deodorizing: The Baking Soda Reset

Sofas absorb smells — cooking, pets, everyday life. Once a month, sprinkle a thin, even layer of baking soda across the entire sofa, let it sit for at least 30 minutes (a few hours is better), then vacuum thoroughly. It's the cheapest deep-refresh there is.

Special Note: Cleaning Corduroy and Textured Fabrics

Ribbed and textured fabrics like corduroy trap dust in the grooves, so vacuuming matters more than with flat weaves. Use a soft brush attachment and work along the ribs, not against them. When spot-cleaning, blot gently — aggressive scrubbing can crush the pile and leave a visible flat patch. After cleaning, brush the fabric softly in the direction of the ribs while it dries to restore the texture.

What Not to Do

  • Don't soak the fabric. Water that reaches the cushion foam takes days to dry and can cause mildew
  • Don't use bleach or ammonia on any upholstery fabric
  • Don't use heat to speed up drying — hairdryers can set stains and shrink fabric. Open a window instead

When to Call a Professional

If the sofa has large set-in stains, an X cleaning code, or hasn't been deep-cleaned in years, a professional upholstery cleaning typically costs far less than reupholstering — and much less than replacing the sofa.

With a five-minute weekly routine and quick action on spills, a quality fabric sofa stays looking new for years, not months.
